Melasma or chloasma is a specific type of hyperpigmentation primarily brought on by hormonal factors. It is theorized to happen when estrogen and progesterone, i.e., female sex hormones, trigger the production of melanin when the skin is exposed to sunlight. It is especially prevalent in women.

In India, melasma affects 20% to 30% of middle-aged women. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common(more than 70%) in men and women under 35. After the age of 50, it was discovered that this number dropped to 10%.

Pigmentation

Having pigment means having color. Disorders of skin pigmentation have an impact on the skin’s color. Melanin is created by specific skin cells and gives the skin its color. The generation of melanin is impacted when these cells are harmed or unwell. Some pigmentation diseases only affect particular areas of the skin. Others have a body-wide impact.

Skin darkens if the body produces an excessive amount of melanin. The skin can become darker due to Addison’s illness, sun exposure, and pregnancy. White areas of skin are a sign of vitiligo, whereas skin darkens if the body generates too little melanin. In addition, the skin of an individual is affected by albinism, a genetic disorder. A person with albinism may be colorless, have paler than average skin, or have patchy missing color. Also contributing to lighter skin are infections, blisters, and burns.

Hyperpigmentation

Uneven skin pigmentation, often known as hyperpigmentation, is a frequently occurring skin condition. On the face, hands, and other regions of the body frequently exposed to the sun, blackish grey spots, also known as age spots or sun spots, or dark patches of skin, often develop.

The most common types are:-

Age Spots:

Small, flat, black spots on the skin are known as age spots. They come in various sizes and typically develop on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms since they are exposed to the sun. Sunspots, liver spots, and solar lentigines are other names for age spots. Age spots are relatively frequent in those over 50, but they can also appear in younger people who spend more time outdoors in the sun.

Symptoms:- These are flat oval sections with increased pigmentation and generally range from tan to dark brown. These occur on skin exposed to the sun the most over time, such as the shoulders, upper back, backs of the hands, and feet.

Melasma:

Brown, blue-gray, or freckle-like patches on the skin characterize a skin disorder called melasma. Skin will develop dark spots of discoloration. When it affects pregnant women, also known as chloasma or the “mask of pregnancy.” The cells that determine your skin’s color produce too much of themselves, which results in melasma. Men can also develop the illness, but women are significantly more likely to do so.

Symptoms:- Discolored patches are a symptom of melasma. The patches are darker than your normal skin and symmetrically, with identical marks on both sides. Melasma can also appear on other parts of your body that are commonly exposed to the sun. Brownish patches are typically seen on the cheeks, forehead, and chin.

Living with PIH can impact your mental health even when it doesn’t directly result in severe physical health issues. For example, makeup can help you feel more confident if your skin is stressing you out or lowering your self-esteem. It is especially true if you have acne-related hyperpigmentation.

Can Homeopathy Treat it Better?

There is a need for complementary therapy to treat PCOS symptoms without side effects, given the harmful effects of conventional treatment and the patients who do not react to these procedures. Homeopathy is a complementary therapy used to treat various illnesses, including PCOS, with positive outcomes.

Homeopathy is an excellent option for PCOS because it provides long-lasting relief from the ailment. Instead of concentrating on the external factors that contribute to the sickness, homeopathy targets and heals the condition’s underlying cause. It provides a more dependable form of treatment as a result. For instance, the medications indicated for an irregular period are distinct from those prescribed for excessive bleeding.
