What is Liver Hepatitis?

It is inflammation of the liver that occurs when body tissues are damaged or infected. The inflammation and damage can affect the way your liver works. Several viruses (viral hepatitis), chemicals, medications, alcohol, certain genetic abnormalities, or an overactive immune system that inadvertently attacks the liver (autoimmune hepatitis) can all cause liver inflammation. There are two categories for it: acute and chronic, depending on how it progresses. Acute hepatitis flares up quickly and then goes away, while chronic hepatitis usually results in fewer hepatitis symptoms and progressive liver damage. There are many hepatitis types and causes that you should know about so you can avoid getting it in time.

Symptoms of Liver Hepatitis

The following are a few sign and symptoms of hepatitis:

  • Mild fever
  • Dark urine
  • Joint pain
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Red skin rash
  • Intense itching
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling due to fluid
  • Clay or brown stools
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Pain in the right upper abdomen

Types of Hepatitis

There are five main classifications: A, B, C, D, and E. Different viruses cause each type of viral hepatitis. By identifying them, you can get treatment for hepatitis.

  1. Hepatitis A:

Hepatitis A is the most common foodborne disease that spreads through polluted water and unwashed food items, and the disease is most commonly seen in children. Still, it is less likely to cause liver damage, is usually short-lived and resolves completely within six months with proper hepatitis treatment.

  2. Hepatitis B:

It is spread by contact with infected blood, injections or bodily fluids, and the disease can be passed from a mother to her child. It is a very severe condition that can lead to liver damage, liver cancer and liver cirrhosis if left untreated for many years.

  3. Hepatitis C:

Hepatitis C is only spread through infected blood or from mother to newborn during childbirth and is usually caused by excessive use of medications that can be toxic to the liver and cause chronic hepatitis (drug-induced hepatitis). That is why you are advised to take medicines only on your doctor's advice.

  4. Hepatitis D:

It is a viral infection that causes inflammation in the liver. Inflammation occurs when body tissues become injured or infected. Inflammation can cause damage to organs. The hepatitis D virus attacks normal cells in the body, causing an infection that can spread from one person to another.

  5. Hepatitis E:

Hepatitis E is spread by the fecal-oral route and causes inflammation of the liver. It is not usually fatal, although it is more severe in women during pregnancy and can cause fetal complications.

Liver Hepatitis Diagnosis

Your doctor will look for liver hepatitis symptoms, such as skin discolouration, a low-grade fever, dark urine, or pain in the abdomen. You can start natural treatment for hepatitis if you want. Tests that help diagnose the type of hepatitis or its complications include:

  1. Blood tests. Blood tests can identify the acute or chronic nature of the hepatitis virus in your body. This is also called a liver function test, which can check for signs of liver injury or disease. These tests can measure the levels of substances the liver produces in the blood or check for signs of abnormal blood clotting.
  2. Liver ultrasonography. Ultrasound can reveal a lot of information about your liver. A medical professional may order a liver ultrasound to detect liver lesions or disorders, identify chronic liver disease, or assess the effectiveness of your treatment.
  3. Liver biopsy. A liver biopsy is a minimally invasive treatment that involves taking a tiny sample of liver tissue to look for indications of injury or illness. Next, a microscope is used to examine the tissue sample for cancerous cells, cysts, parasites, or other aberrant cells.
  4. MRI and CT scans. Liver lesions can be examined and characterised using cross-sectional imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). These modalities are useful in diagnosing tumour thrombus and detecting and measuring liver fat content.

Home Remedies For Liver Hepatitis

To make your liver healthy and disease-free, you can eliminate liver-related problems by making some changes in your life, for which you can use the home remedies for hepatitis given below.

  • Pomegranates tea

Pomegranate tea, rich in potassium, calcium, and vitamin C, is well-known as a superfood for liver detoxification. It also possesses potent antioxidants. Additionally, the peel, leaves, and petals of pomegranates are calming to our livers. Pomegranate peel can be boiled in two cups of water until it reduces by half, then sipped like tea at night.

  • Fibre-rich food

Fibrous foods, which include fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas, oranges, pears, and berries, as well as veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage, enhance liver functions and rid our bodies of fatty pollutants. Fibre promotes healthy digestion by attaching itself to bile found in the large intestine.

  • Radish

Radishes are high in sulfur-based compounds and diastase, promoting bile flow and digestion, especially of starches. To improve digestion and aid cleansing, mix equal amounts of cucumber, radish and carrot juice and drink it twice a day.

  • Avoid sugar

Carbohydrates found in the diet, such as fructose, maltose, and sucrose, cause fat to be stored in our liver. Added sugars often added to foods include cane sugar, honey, molasses, syrups, fruit juice concentrates, high fructose corn syrup, and corn sweeteners. These cause liver damage.

  • Lose excess weight

Reducing body weight can alleviate symptoms such as inflammation, fibrosis, and scarring while also reducing the accumulation of fat in the liver. Before beginning any weight-loss regimen, consult your doctor or get a medical consultation to choose the best type of weight-loss strategy.
