What is Female Infertility?

Female infertility is a condition in which a woman has difficulty conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy to full term after one year (or six months for women over 35) of regular, unprotected intercourse. This issue can arise from a range of factors, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle choices, or underlying health conditions.

In India, female infertility is often viewed as a disability, with societal norms placing considerable pressure on women to conceive and adhere to traditional roles of motherhood. This can affect the career, emotional well-being, as well as relationships of the patients, leading to family pressure and social isolation. However, every woman deserves a chance to nurture life, with care that nurtures her too.

At Bharat Homeopathy, we deeply understand the personal and social burden that infertility brings. By delivering personalised, natural, and side-effect-free homeopathic remedies for infertility, we aim to provide the best possible treatment to each and every patient tailored to their specific needs.

However, it is important to note that infertility is not only a female’s problem rather, it must be regarded as a couple's issue, and both partners must get tested if they are facing difficulty in conceiving.

Female Infertility symptoms

The most notable symptom of the condition is the inability of females to conceive, even after numerous attempts or experiencing repeated miscarriages shortly after becoming pregnant. They can also experience the following difficulties that might indicate the condition;

  1. Menstrual Cycle:

    If your menstrual cycle is too long (40 days or more), too short (less than 21 days), irregular, or missing

  2. Pain:

    Having painful periods, back pain, pelvic pain, or cramps

  3. Bleeding:

    Heavy bleeding, lighter bleeding than normal

  4. Other Symptoms:

    Feeling very tired, feeling sick, having irregular bowel movements, pain during intercourse

  5. Hormonal Changes:

    Changes like acne, facial hair growth, changes in breast size or pain, mood swings

Types of infertility in females

Female infertility can be classified into two subtypes;

  1. Primary Infertility: This occurs when a woman has never been pregnant or has been unable to give birth to the baby at any time after conceiving.
  2. Secondary Infertility: This refers to a situation where a woman has had one or more successful pregnancies in the past and has given birth to a child but is currently unable to conceive again.

What are the leading causes of fertility issues in females?

From serious health conditions like endometriosis, premature ovarian failure, and uterine fibroids to lifestyle disorders like PCOS, women can experience infertility due to multiple reasons. Some of the common causes include;

  1. Uterine Issues

    Conditions like uterine fibroids and polyps can affect the health of the uterine system, leading to infertility in females.

    • Uterine fibroids are tumours that can block the fallopian tubes or hinder the implantation of a fertilised egg in the uterus.
    • Uterine polyps, also termed endometrial polyps, are soft, finger-like growths that can form in the lining of the uterus. Their size can range from as small as a seed to larger than a ball, and they may occur individually or in clusters.
  2. Fallopian Tube Issues:

    These problems may arise from damage or blockages that prevent sperm from reaching the egg or hinder a fertilised egg from entering the uterus.

    • Blockages can occur due to infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is often caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
    • Endometriosis occurs when tissue that is usually present on the inside lining of the uterus grows outside of it, resulting in swelling, scarring, and adhesions that may obstruct the fallopian tubes.
  3. Ovulation Disorders:

    These disorders can result from hormonal imbalances, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), among other factors.

    • PCOS/PCOD is characterised by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated levels of androgens, and the presence of small ovarian cysts. Such issues can affect the ovaries of a woman during reproductive ages.
    • Endometriomas, commonly known as chocolate cysts, is a medical condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in the ovaries. This condition can reduce fertility, with 30-40% of women affected by endometriosis experiencing difficulties in becoming pregnant.
  4. Egg Count and Quality Concerns:

    Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and both the quality and quantity of these eggs diminish with age.

    • As women grow older, they have fewer eggs available, and their bodies tend to utilise the healthiest eggs first. So, infertility in women of more than 35 years of age arises due to this concern.
    • Behaviors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and exposure to environmental contaminants can significantly affect the quality of eggs.

Which lifestyle modification is likely to have the most positive impact on a woman's fertility?

In addition to an appropriate medical treatment plan, adopting the following lifestyle changes can benefit female patients experiencing fertility issues;

  • Diet: Consume a balanced diet that includes multiple fresh and organic fruits and green vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit the consumption of refined carbohydrates.
  • Exercise: Engage in regular but moderate exercise. You can participate in activities like jogging early in the morning, cycling, joining a Zumba class, or practising yoga. However, excessive or intense exercise may negatively impact ovulation.
  • Weight: Managing weight can enhance fertility in women who are overweight or underweight and experiencing fertility issues related to hormonal imbalances. Achieving a healthy weight, according to the BMI table ( Body Mass Index), can help restore hormonal balance, improve blood sugar levels, and decrease insulin resistance.
  • Stress: Chronic stress can affect the hormonal balance and interfere with the ovulation process of the females. In fact, it is considered to be a leading cause of delayed periods and lifestyle-related disorders. Consider practices such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing to manage stress.
  • Alcohol and Smoking: Smoking affects the ability to conceive healthy children as it impacts the fallopian tubes and cervix, potentially leading to issues such as ectopic pregnancies. Alcohol, particularly when consumed in large quantities, affects the female reproductive cycle and ovulation. So, patents must prohibit these two habits.
  • Toxins: Exposure to pesticides, in a direct or indirect way, has been associated with a higher risk of infertility, along with other reproductive issues such as miscarriage and birth defects. Minimise exposure to toxins. Whenever possible, opt for organic produce, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and consider supporting local farmers who practice sustainable and pesticide-free methods.
