Understand What is Bronchitis?

A lung disease in which the bigger airways called bronchi (Further classified in primary, secondary, and tertiary bronchi) is affected. Inflammation in the inner lining of the bronchi appears that obstructs the air from flowing easily through it. An infection that generally starts bronchitis occurs in your nose or throat and passes onto the bronchi through the bronchial tubes. Your body starts to fight this well-settled infection, causes swelling in the native parts, and narrows down the bronchial airways. Production of more mucus and coughing starts as the resulting symptom.

Causes of Bronchitis

Smoking is the leading cause of bronchitis. This is the main reason for worsening acute bronchitis to become chronic; if looking at the statistic, more than 90% of people with bronchitis suffering smoke or used to smoke.

However, chronic bronchitis is usually, but not always caused by smoking. There are some other causes that are responsible and are much necessary to be taken care of. Some of the major reasons to Bronchitis are:

  • Secondhand smoke
  • Air pollution irritants (ozone and nitrogen dioxide)
  • Dust (coal or grain dust)
  • Fume (Longer exposure to hairspray, paints, welding fume, and engine exhaust)

Symptoms of Bronchitis

Acute and chronic bronchitis show almost the same symptoms; the chronic stage has them just from a longer period. In this disease, the small hair-like structure called cilia that move phlegm out of your lungs gets damaged; hence the mucus is trapped in the lungs. This causes the walls of the lungs to become irritated, swell, and narrow, and the stale air present inside the lungs to be trapped instead of exhaling and causing difficulty in breathing.

Some of the major seen symptoms of bronchitis are:

  • Constant coughs that causes yellow, white, or green phlegm.
  • Wheezing and breathlessness
  • Breath shortening in physical activities
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling in foot, ankle, or legs
  • Headache

Types of Bronchitis

There are two types of bronchitis classified according to their severeness.

Acute Bronchitis

Also called Short-term bronchitis, results from a viral infection. The disease is contagious and causes inflammation in the bronchial tubes. A standard course of medicines can help revive it, but it is misjudged because it does not show any major complications, and the wrong medication makes it worse. However, in many cases where the metabolism is much healthy, the body eliminates it on its own.

Chronic Bronchitis

It is a chronic stage of bronchitis that results from the negligence of acute symptoms or due to a lower metabolism level in the patient. Although the patient has already gone through a long–term (From 3 months to some years) inflammation of the bronchi, it can contribute to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Prevention of Bronchitis

  • Acute bronchitis prevention: Acute bronchitis is an infection caused in the lungs by the virus, so you should take preventive steps that will help you not to catch a virus.
    1. Wash hands: Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
    2. Sanitize: When there is no availability of water and soap, sanitizers will help you keep disinfected.
    3. Vaccines: Get all updated shots of flu and pneumonia vaccines.
  • Chronic bronchitis prevention: Smoking is found to be the number one cause of bronchitis; hence it is better to quit smoking if you do and don’t start if you do not smoke. Almost 70 – 80% of bronchitis cases involve people with a history of smoking
    1. Don’t smoke: quit smoking or never start if you do not. Keep yourself away from secondhand smoke
    2. Irritants: Do not come into long-term exposure of deodorants, hairsprays, chemicals, or aerosol spray.
    3. Wear masks: If your job includes working around dust or fumes, be sure that you keep on respiratory equipment.

Do not delay in diagnosis!

Early detection of symptoms and early diagnosis not only prevent the progression of the disease but help long life by eliminating the menace of possible complications through proper treatment. The prognosis of the disease perhaps differs in patients depending on their overall health, severity, age, and lifestyle choices. According to healthcare researchers, older age usually means a worse prognosis.

Some crucial tests are done in Pulmonary Fibrosis, such as chest X-ray, CT scan, pulmonary function test, arterial blood gas test, and tissue biopsy.

Understand the Differences In Diagnosis

Since there are many similarities in the symptoms of diseases like Tuberculosis (TB), asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis, doctors often fail to diagnose the condition. In such a situation, some differences you should understand. Fever is present in TB, whereas, in Pulmonary Fibrosis, there is usually no fever. Blood comes in the cough of TB, whereas this cough usually does not contain blood. There is no change in the nails of TB patients, whereas the nails of the patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis become like the beak of a parrot. When TB bacteria are found in the sputum test, this condition recognizes TB.
