Homeopathy. Its History and journey

Homeopathy is a therapy that is based on the principle of “सम: समम् शमयति” or “समरूपता.” It works on the belief that the body can heal itself. According to this principle, homeopathic medicines do not suppress the disease like allopathic medicines but activate the body’s self-healing ability to eliminate it from the root. We all know that homeopathy’s birthplace is Germany, but nowadays, India is known as the homeland of homeopathy.

Homeopathy and its roots

The practice of bloodletting began about 3000 years ago with the Egyptians, then continued with the Greeks and Romans, Arabs and Asians, then spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance in the year (1732–1799).

After riding in snowy weather, George Washington developed a fever and respiratory distress. Under the treatment of his physicians, he had copious amounts of blood drawn, emetics, blisterings, and laxatives. He died the next night of what has been diagnosed retrospectively as epiglottitis and shock.

And this system of treatment reached its peak in Europe in the 19th century. Then Homeopathy was introduced by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann as a system of medical science based on the “law of similarity.”

That helped people get rid of the bloody treatment process and claimed that a hefty dose of quinine, widely used for the successful treatment of malaria, produced an effect similar to the symptoms of malaria patients. Thus he concluded that all diseases are best treated by drugs produced in healthy individuals that have the same symptoms of those diseases. And that’s how homeopathy emerged as an alternative medicine without any pain.

Homeopathy came to India.

Homeopathy was introduced in India when some German missionaries and physicians started distributing homeopathic medicines among the residents. However, homeopathy took its roots in India in 1839, when Dr. John Martin Honigberger successfully treated Maharaja Ranjit Singh for paralysis of the vocal cords. Dr. Honigberger settled in Kolkata (then Calcutta) and became famous as a cholera physician. Later, Dr. M.L. Sircar, a well-known physician of his time, also started practicing homeopathy. He edited the first homeopathic journal, “Calcutta Journal of Medicine,” in 1868. In 1881, many eminent physicians, including Dr. P.C. Majumdar and Dr. DN Roy, established the first homeopathic college – ‘Calcutta Homoeopathic Medical College.’ Dr. Lahiri, Dr. B.K. Sarkar and many other physicians made individual efforts to develop Homeopathy as a profession. He is well known for his contribution to the advancement of Homeopathy, not only in West Bengal but throughout the country.

In 1937, Assembly recommended to the Governor Generals in Council that he may kindly introduce homeopathic treatment in Government clinics in India and homeopathic colleges in India.” like the same status and recognition as in the case of allopathic colleges.” Later, in 1948, the same assembly adopted another resolution regarding homeopathy, after which the Homeopathic Inquiry Committee was constituted. In 1949, this inquiry committee submitted its report, which recommended that a Central Homoeopathic Council be formed. Finally, in 1952, a Homoeopathic Ad-hoc Committee (re-named ‘Homeopathic Advisory Committee’ in 1954) was constituted, giving the Government all the matters relating to Homeopathy. Finally, in 1973, Parliament passed the Homeopathy Central Council Act to regulate homeopathic education and practice in the country.
