Thyroid

A tiny butterfly-shaped thyroid gland can be discovered near the base of your neck, just below Adam’s apple. This gland produces thyroid hormone, which is carried throughout your body via the blood. The thyroid hormone affects several aspects of the body’s metabolism, such as how quickly the calories are burnt and how fast the heart beats.

Thyroid Disorders result in either overproduction or underproduction of the hormone. As a result, one may experience fatigue or agitation more frequently or lose or gain weight, depending on the hormone the thyroid produces. Thyroid disorders are more common in women than males, particularly after menopause and immediately after pregnancy. Therefore, it becomes essential for females to get proper thyroid treatment.

Worldwide prevalence

Two hundred million people worldwide are estimated to suffer from thyroid disorders. In addition, iodine, a nutrient required for the formation of thyroid hormones, is in danger of insufficiency in over 2800 million individuals, or 40% of the world’s population. There are thought to be 42 million thyroid ailment sufferers in India, based on projections from numerous research on the condition.

A thyroid problem will impact 1 in 8 women at some point. About ten times as many women as men are at risk. One explanation is that autoimmune responses, which occur when the body’s immune system begins to target its own cells, frequently cause thyroid diseases.

The four most common types of thyroid disorders are:-

Thyroidism

Hyperthyroidism

Goiter & Iodine Deficiency Disorders

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Causes

Iodine Deficiency

Early-life iodine deficiency affects cognition and growth but is also a significant factor in adult thyroid diseases. Goiter and hypothyroidism result from severe iodine deficiency.

Non-functioning thyroid gland

Sometimes, the thyroid gland isn’t operating correctly from birth. About 1 in 4,000 newborns are impacted by this. The youngster may have physical and mental problems in the future if it is left untreated. Therefore, a screening blood test is administered to all infants to check their thyroid function.

Thyroiditis

Thyroiditis causes inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is a small, skin-covered gland with the appearance of a butterfly located at the front of your neck. The term “thyroiditis” describes several disorders that cause thyroid inflammation. Thyroiditis can cause the thyroid hormone to be produced either too much or too little.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

It causes damage to the thyroid gland. Other names include autoimmune thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate nearly every aspect of the body’s metabolism, or how food is converted into energy, and keep it operating regularly.

Postpartum thyroiditis

An uncommon illness found most commonly in women post-pregnancy. Approximately 5% of women suffer from this every year after pregnancy. Occasionally hyperthyroidism (high thyroid hormone levels in the blood) can arise from postpartum thyroiditis (low thyroid hormone levels in the blood). First, there is hyperthyroidism; then, there is hypothyroidism.

Why is it more prominent in women?

Autoimmune reactions, i.e., when the body’s immune system starts to target its cells, cause the thyroid to become active. Females are more likely to have autoimmune disorders than males.

The interaction between thyroid hormones and the hormones that change during the menstrual cycle is another factor contributing to the incidence of thyroid problems in women. Although thyroid issues can arise anytime, they are more prevalent in women after menopause because of the altered hormone levels. Unfortunately, some women could misunderstand the signs of thyroid issues for those in menopause, which can keep them from getting help.

Can this be treated?

With proper care, many of the consequences and concerns related to thyroid issues in women can be addressed. It is essential to get treatment if you experience any symptoms because thyroid issues can significantly influence your health and quality of life, as well as your menstrual cycle and fertility. Fatigue, unexpected weight loss or increase, and changes in your mood or energy levels are all potential indicators of thyroid issues. It is always best to consult a medical professional when you detect any changes, even if it can be simple to mistake the symptoms for other conditions, such as menopause.
